A Lasting Love

Gary Grams '64 and Sharon Garlisch '64 Grams have been married over fifty years, and they have their freshman English class to thank for their relationship. Gary sat in the back row with two other basketball players as their professor told them the inspiring words, “Life is like a roll of toilet paper.”

The two dated all throughout their time at Valpo, Sharon was a Home Economics major and Gary was a Chemistry major.  Sharon and her friends used to use the cooking labs to invite for professors and administrators over to eat.  Gary claims he only married her for her ability to make a cherry pie.

During their four years, Gary was a part of Theta Chi fraternity and Sharon was a Kappa Psi Omega.  They still keep in touch with many of their Greek life friends today.  They have been back for many reunions over the years, and are looking forward to attending their fiftieth reunion this fall.

Since they have been retired, Gary and Sharon have been fortunate to travel and experience different cultures around the world in China, Egypt, Israel and soon, South America.  In 2000, they also went on the Germany trip with other Valpo Alums.  Valpo is a place that will always be important to them, and to their son, who followed in their footsteps, went to Valpo and met his wife there as well.

The photo above is Gary and Sharon visiting the “Pinta,” one of Columbus’ ships moored in Grafton, Illinois.
